VISITING CASTLES IN THE COSTA BLANCA REGION OF SPAIN

For many years Spain was regarded as a country that was full of castles and some of the best regions to see these structures is in Costa Blanca. On the eastern coast of Spain lies a place that is quite famous. Costa Blanca is known for its beaches and for its resorts that cater for the tourists. But what many people don’t realize is that there is hidden treasure in the mountain areas. That treasure is in the form of amazing castles which can be seen from the high mountain perches that they are located on offering panoramic breathtaking views of the area. Get the facts?

A great example of just one these castles is the Santa Pola Castle. Built in the 16th century to guard against pirate attacks, this renaissance style castle is a masterpiece of architecture and has among other things the Archaeological Museum within its walls. There one can see many exhibits of the Roman occupation of Santa Pola including those of the original people of this town and the Cueva de las Aranas or the Cave of spiders. If that’s not enough, then continue to the Fishing Museum, which is also located in the Santa Pola Castle. You will get to experience a real piece of history.

While Alicante on Benacantil mountain has its very own fortress called the Castell Santa Barbara. This castle was constructed in the 10th century by the Moors and its sheer size and position make it a wonder to see from miles away. When it is lit up at night it is a truly magnificent site. King Alfonso the Wise renamed it after recapturing it from the Moors on December 4th, 1248 which was the day of Saint Barbara. The museum on the castle grounds provides a more detailed insight into its past and the tower has exhibits as well as dungeons and cannons. The walls of the castle give a great view of Alicantes the sea horizon and hidden inside the property is a café for those who wish to rest and recover.

On the hilltop over the town of Cartagena lies an ancient structure, The Concepcion Castle. This castle as built in the 13th century and resides on a precarious looking hill. It can be accessed by a lift from the cliff or you can choose to walk the steep incline to the door. Many of the Roman stones used in the reconstruction of this castle came from the Roman amphitheatre below. In the interior can be found a gallery and exhibit explaining some of the history of the castle and the area. Around the castle is a very pretty duck pond and peacocks that roam freely, It’s a rather captivating place.

These are just a few of the many old castles to be found in Costa Blanca. If you take time to look you will discover many that are scattered around the region. It’s a real journey of history and old Spain as you walk through the walls of these hidden treasures.
